What To Do If Car Key Breaks In Ignition

If your car key breaks in the ignition, you may be wondering what to do. In this blog post, we will discuss some of the most common solutions and what to do if none of them work. From getting a key duplicated to replacing the key itself, we will cover everything you need to know so that you can get back on the road as quickly as possible.

Check the Engine Light

If your car key breaks in the ignition, you’ll need to replace the key. You can do this by buying a new key from a dealer or from a store that sells automotive supplies. Follow these instructions to replace the key: 1. Disconnect the battery cable. 2. Remove the steering wheel and instrument panel. 3. Remove the ignition switch cover. 4. Remove the four screws that hold the ignition switch in place. 5. Lift off the ignition switch and remove it from the car. 6. Replace the ignition switch with a new one, screwing it in place in reverse order (screws first, then cover). 7. reconnect the battery cable and steering wheel/instrument panel assembly, then reattach the ignition switch cover

Open the Hood

If you have a car with an ignition key that breaks in the middle of your shift, there are a few things you can do. If the key is still in the ignition, depress the brake pedal and turn the wheel to the left or right to immobilize the vehicle. Remove the key from the ignition. If it’s still in the lock cylinder, turn it anticlockwise until it comes out. Push it back into the lock cylinder and turn it clockwise to lock it into place. Remove any debris blocking the keyhole. Insert a flathead screwdriver between the door handle and jamb and pry open door. Lift off door panel at front hinge pillar. Push or pull out broken key from hole (be careful not to lose screws). Replace panel, reinstall door handle and jamb using screws that were removed earlier. Replace all trim around door opening/keyhole

Reset the Car’s Computer

If your car’s key breaks in the ignition, you’ll need to reset the car’s computer. To do this, you’ll need to remove the battery and disconnect the cables. Next, remove the cover of the dashboard and locate the CMOS chip. Resetting the computer will erase all of your data so be sure to back it up first.
